Role Summary
• A for-credit legal externship, summer 2027, in NPR's Office of the General Counsel — the in-house legal team of the national public radio network — focused on copyright. Law students support senior counsel on copyright questions, deciding when material can be used under fair use, and licensing for audio content.
Responsibilities
• Evaluate copyright issues in audio and video content and perform legal research.
• Make fair use determinations and assist with rights management.
• Draft and review permissions agreements and assess proposed legal licensing terms.
Required Knowledge & Experience
• Degree: Current law student (2L or 3L).
• Coursework: Completion of a copyright law course required before start date.
• Experience: Fair use, intellectual property, or licensing experience preferred.
Work & Eligibility
• Dates: May 10 to August 13, 2027 (12 weeks, 40 hours per week).
• Credit: Must receive academic course credit or a school-sponsored stipend.
