Role Summary
• A two-year legal fellowship, starting fall 2027, in the ACLU's National Security Project in New York. Fellows work as junior lawyers on lawsuits and advocacy challenging government actions taken in the name of national security — surveillance, watchlists, detention — particularly where they harm marginalised communities.
Responsibilities
• Conduct legal research, fact development, and construct legal theories for litigation.
• Draft pleadings, briefs, legal memoranda, motions, and public education materials.
• Interview clients and witnesses, participate in discovery, and support ACLU affiliates.
• Help oversee and coordinate summer law interns.
Required Knowledge & Experience
• Degree: J.D. from a U.S. law school by Spring 2027 required.
• Preferred: Knowledge of civil liberties issues related to national security and public interest law experience.
Work & Eligibility
• Two-year term starting in Fall 2027.
• In-office requirement of two days per week or eight days per month.
