Acing the Legislative Correspondent Interview

Correspondent interviews test judgment under volume. Expect questions about how you’d handle a surge of constituent mail on a contentious vote, or how you’d respond to a letter you personally disagree with. Non-partisan professionalism is the trait being measured.

Have a writing sample ready and be prepared to defend its choices — tone, length, and how you represented the member’s position without inventing one. Offices hire correspondents who can sound like someone else on the page.

Close with a question about the office’s casework and mail volume. It signals you understand the job is service first, politics second.
